Following President Kennedy`s death in 1963, plans were immediately made to replace the Franklin half dollar with the likeness of the recently assassinated President. The 1964 Kennedy half dollar would be the last to contain 90% silver. The following year, LBJ took the U.S. off of the silver standard. From 1965 to 1970, the Kennedy half dollar was reduced to 40% silver and in 1971 silver was removed all together. Each Kennedy half dollar contains .36169 oz. of silver.
