This morning finds gold and silver still under pressure, but off the overnight lows. Silver, which broke below $28.00 overnight, continues to be weaker than gold as witnessed by the gold / silver ratio, which now stands at 55.50. The platinum community is convening this week in London for “platinum week”. The highlight yesterday was Johnson Matthey’s annual report, which called for physical platinum to have a surplus this year while palladium would likely see a shortage.

As continued weak global economic data continues to plague all markets, we are likely to see an increase in calls from politicians and economists for QE3 here in the U.S. and stimulus packages abroad, but until a commitment comes from our central bank, the USD will continue to catch bids and keep the pressure on precious metals. With further short term weakness expected, keep an eye on silver as it may be the leader in the next 5 percent plus move in prices. With long term technical support pegged at $27.50, a break below this level could see us revisit $26.10, which was the low for 2011.

A History of Holding Its Value: Unlike paper currency, gold and silver have maintained their long-term value throughout the ages. People see gold and silver as a way to pass on and preserve their wealth from one generation to the next.

Weakness of the U.S. Dollar: Although the U.S. dollar is one of the world’s most important reserve currencies, when the value of the dollar falls against other currencies as it did between 1998 and 2008, this often prompts people to flock to the security of gold and silver, which raises the market price of those precious metals. The price of gold nearly tripled between 1998 and 2008, reaching the $1,000-an-ounce milestone in early 2008. The decline in the U.S. dollar occurred for a number of reasons, including the country’s large budget and trade deficits and a large increase in the money supply.

Inflation: Gold has historically been an excellent hedge against inflation, because its price tends to rise when the cost of living increases.

Deflation: Deflation, a period in which prices contract, business activity slows and the economy is burdened by excessive debt, has not been seen globally since the Great Depression of the 1930s. During that time, the relative purchasing power of gold soared while other prices dropped sharply.

Geopolitical Uncertainty: Gold and silver retain their value not only in times of financial uncertainty, but in times of geopolitical uncertainty. It is often called the “crisis commodity”, because people flee to its relative safety when world tensions rise; during such times, it often outperforms other investments.

Supply Constraints: Much of the supply of gold in the market since the 1990s has come from sales of gold bullion from the vaults of global central banks. This selling by global central banks slowed greatly in 2008. At the same time, production of new gold from mines has been on the decline since 2000.

Increasing Demand: Increased wealth of emerging market economies has boosted demand for gold and silver. In many of these countries, gold or silver are intertwined into the culture. India is one of the largest gold-consuming nations in the world, and gold has many uses there, including jewelry. As such, the Indian wedding season in October is traditionally the time of the year that sees the highest global demand for gold. In China, where gold bars are a traditional form of saving, the demand for gold has also shown rapid growth. Demand for gold and silver has also grown among investors. Many are beginning to see these commodities as an investment class into which funds should be allocated. Gold and/or Silver should be an important part of a diversified investment portfolio. Although the price of gold and silver can be volatile in the short term, they have always maintained their value over the long term. On the precious metals front a slight boost, from news the Euro zone is on the road to financial recovery. This optimism slowed the greenback down a bit, (because the price of gold and silver is based in US dollars, when the dollar goes down precious metals “generally” go up). Friday afternoon closings: Gold up nearly $16.00 oz ($1,668.30 oz), Silver up $0.25 oz ($32.25 oz) Platinum up $15.00 oz ($1638.00 oz) and Palladium up $9.50 oz ($654.50 oz). Goldman Sachs is predicting gold prices to shoot to nearly $2,000.00 an oz within a year citing subdued U.S. economic growth and further quantitative easing by the Federal Reserve later this year. On the other hand the CPM group is predicting gold will not surpass its all-time high set in 2011 however 2012 could potentially mark the 11^th consecutive year of record annual average gold prices.

Some of the top writers, analysts and not so coincidentally, entrepreneurs who own companies that sell gold and silver bullion, go on the record to proclaim a position in precious metals is the opportunity of a lifetime. Many others will ever so contradictory suggest that those who buy gold bullion or buy silver bullion will “make a lot of money!” Quite frankly these statements couldn’t be further off the mark in our humble opinion. In fact we believe a position in gold bullion or silver bullion provides much more than the opportunity to make a few dollars. We believe a position in gold or silver bullion is protection from the obvious and that is: The US dollar at some point, for a myriad of reasons will fail. Wall Street has you convinced that gold and silver is just another bubble that will eventually go back into hibernation once our economic recovery gains traction. If only it was that simple.

We believe that an asset classified as an “investment”, offers some sort of income, pays the investor interest or dividends. At the end of the day many Americans believe they are diversified if they are holding a gold or silver ETF, mining shares or a futures contract. Many of today`s IRA`s offer “funds” that are invested in gold and silver in various flavors. The fact of the matter is all of these holdings are nothing more than paper, backed by the dollar or denominated in dollars (paper not gold or silver). Many of these investments should be considered as much of a hedge as government bonds. In many cases you may be better off investing in fine art or real estate (not liquid and still hasn’t hit bottom…). The difference here is that at least you have something tangible that could be redeemed for its equivalence in services or goods. (The purpose and primary reason for money)

Gold bullion and silver bullion in particular doesn’t offer the investor income, interest or dividends in fact it offers something many investors haven’t had for a very long time, “piece of mind!” When you hold gold and silver bullion in your hands, you own it (not a bank or corporation) you hold the asset (in a private safe or secure place private to only you and your family) you control it! (In your hands and not some banker) Gold and silver bullion is a universal asset and has been considered a form of wealth for thousands of years. Its value when compared to other necessities like food, clothing, shelter, has been consistent for thousands of years. As you can see, a position in gold bullion or silver bullion is liquid, portable and private. And by the way, if you decide to protect your wealth with gold or silver bullion and it doubles in value, how much buying power would the greenbacks you receive in return for your metals give you? Like any insurance you currently have, hopefully it is never needed.

26MAR2012: Metals are off to a fast start this morning after ending last week on a high note. Friday afternoon closings:  Gold $1,660.00 (UP $18.00), Silver $32.25 (UP $0.85), Platinum $1,625.00 (UP $15.00) Palladium $660.00 (UP $9.00). The US Government as well as many other nations abroad are fired up about a stronger US dollar, as cyclical data suggests the US economy is headed in the right direction. The US dollar seemingly is getting its biggest boost from the Euro zone conundrum where the Euro continues to sputter while little has changed to solve their debt problems, other than more stimulus followed by even more stimulus. Because the US dollar has seen continued strength, gold and silver prices will remain flat at best (opportunity!) To the untrained eye, lower gold and silver prices will be the center piece for gregarious jubilation by those living in denial that we don’t have a serious financial problem here in America. On the other hand the “trained eye” seizes the situation and the opportunity. The situation: the world banks are for the most part bankrupt! The opportunity: lower gold and silver prices mean you get way more for the dollar! Mathematically speaking the financial (debt) problem I am speaking of cannot be fixed!

You don’t need to be a mathematician or an economist to see that inflation is already here. History books tell us that every currency in the history of mankind at one point or another has failed. Our currency is currently in the process of failing as the US dollar buys less and less each day. The dwindling middle class is feeling this painful event every time they shop for the basics: food, clothing, gas etc. The American people are already upside down and the real problems haven’t even begun. I realize this scenario sounds grim but let’s call it what it really is: Inflation! Our message to our customers is clear: The time to buy the fire insurance is before the fire! The hand writing is on the wall people, we recommend you take action now to protect “YOUR” freedom, and “YOUR” way of life! The soup and bread lines they speak of in our history books were real. As the old saying goes, “A good plan today is better than a perfect plan tomorrow!”

The US Mint is reporting rather sluggish sales for American Silver Eagles so far this year, which is yet another sign investors feel confident about a recovery for our economy despite record amounts of debt, higher prices at the pump, and real unemployment that is easily higher than 10%! 22% Unemployment?

In his book, The Dollar Freefall, author Michael Dube explains how unemployment was figured in the past and how it is figured today. Chances are real good you know someone who is unemployed and struggling to find work. The US government uses formulas for figuring unemployment that are hard to understand and are frankly misleading. Using today’s complicated method; our government no longer figures into their equation the people who have simply given up trying to find a job. To boost their numbers they fully count the workers who are “underemployed”, e.g. a Harvard MBA who can’t find a quality job and takes a low – paying temporary part time clerical job. In the US, this is considered a job and does not count as being unemployed. Our government also does not include the long – term unemployed that are no longer eligible for unemployment benefits.

According to John Williams, of Shadow Statistics, if our government calculated unemployment the old way, the “real” unemployment rate in the United States would be near 22%!  Mr. Dube states, “These are unemployment figures that rival those of the Great Depression in fact, considering other factors unemployment should be even higher than these astonishing figures. In the crash of 2008, the US economy rapidly shrank, possibly by as much as 15%. That’s huge by any standard. This drop would not have caused a recession here, but would have led directly to a depression.” Of course our government came to the rescue adding over a trillion dollars of free money to our economy to back fill the gap in lost jobs etc…Mr. Dube makes a strong case in his book for “real” unemployment being more than 30%.

Is it Time to Buy Gold & Silver Bullion?
